How To Use
Clicking the Practise Typing button on the titles screen will take you to the main screen.
On the main screen you will see a keyboard similar to your own. At the top of the screen is a drop down list of text files. Some are longer and more difficult to type than others. The Little Fisherman and Bob Saves Fred are the easier texts to try. If you wish to type your own texts, just choose Add/Edit Text Files in the top menu under Options.
Choose a file to try and it will load into the blue text box below the file selector. The green text box should have the cursor flashing and will be where any text you type will appear. Try to copy the text in the blue box by typing what you see, into the green box. When you make a mistake, the letter/s will turn red in the blue box and you will hear a beep sound if you have the speakers on and sound enabled. You can move back using the backspace key to correct any mistakes.
While you type, a counter at the top of the screen will keep a record of approximately how many words per minute you are typing. Don't worry if this looks like a low figure. It will get better the more you practise and it is better to be slow and correct than too quick and make lots of mistakes.
Either side of the file selector list are two buttons. One is Pause which will stop the program for you and keep your words per minute score while you have a break. The other is a Close button for exiting from the program.
On both text areas you are able to right mouse click and choose to Copy or Print the selected text.
Certificate Screen
When you finish an exercise, a Certificate scroll will appear on the top right of the main screen. Clicking it will take you to the Certificate screen where you can print out a certificate and/or save it for printing out at a later time. Also, in the top menu under Options you can move to the Certificate screen at any time, showing your progress so far. To save a certificate click on the Save button and enter a name for it in the dialogue window that appears. To open an old certificate click the Open button and choose your file from the browser window that appears. To move back to the typing screen, click the Back button in the bottom left of the screen.
Please note that the save feature does not save a score to continue with, it just saves your certificate.
Printing Certificates
Click the Print button in the bottom right of the screen. The certificate is then printed out in A5 size i.e. the top half of a sheet of A4 (US Letter). You can select Printer Setup and change to Landscape by pressing F6, if your printer supports this option. This will print the certificate out and enlarge it to full A4 size. Remember to reset your printer settings afterwards, back to portrait. Unfortunately I can't get the program to print out the fonts as nicely as a word processor does but my son Richard was very pleased with the results, so I hope you are.
